What Does the CDCP Cover? A South Surrey Patient's Guide

What the CDCP is

The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) is a federal program that helps people without private dental insurance afford care. It rolled out in stages, and it now covers a wide range of ages. If cost has been the reason you've put off the dentist, this may be the thing that finally makes it doable.

We mention this because not every dental office participates in the CDCP. We do, gladly. If you live in South Surrey, White Rock, or a nearby neighbourhood and you have a CDCP card, you're welcome here.

Who qualifies

Qualifying comes down to a few general requirements. You'll typically need to meet all of them when you apply.

  • You don't have access to private dental insurance, whether through work, a pension, or a spouse.
  • Your adjusted family net income falls within the program's limits. Your income level determines how much of the eligible amount the CDCP contributes, and you may still have a copay depending on your coverage and the treatment provided.
  • You're a Canadian resident who filed taxes for the year that applies.
  • You have a valid Social Insurance Number.

What's typically covered

The CDCP is built around essential dental care, the kind that keeps you healthy, rather than purely cosmetic work. Coverage has expanded over time, so think of the list below as a guide to what's often included, not a promise for your exact situation.

  • Checkups, exams, and X-rays.
  • Cleanings and scaling, up to set limits each year.
  • Fillings and other basic repairs.
  • Tooth removal and certain oral surgery.
  • Root canals and some related care.
  • Dentures, often with approval needed first.
  • Crowns and some more complex treatments may require prior approval and could involve additional out-of-pocket costs.

What about the copay?

If your family income is below the lower income threshold, the CDCP may cover 100% of eligible services. If you're in a higher income band, the plan covers a portion of the eligible amount and you'll pay the remainder, often around 40% or 60% of the eligible amount, depending on your coverage.

One important detail: the CDCP reimburses treatment according to its own fee schedule, which is generally lower than the British Columbia fee guide. That means there may still be a small out-of-pocket balance, even for covered services. Before any treatment begins, we'll explain your coverage, estimate any copay, and answer your questions so there are no surprises.

Using your CDCP coverage with us

Bring your CDCP confirmation and your member details to your first visit, and we'll take it from there. We send claims straight to Sun Life, who runs the plan, so you're not stuck paying everything yourself and waiting to be paid back.

If a treatment needs approval first, we'll prepare and send the request for you and wait for the approval before we book the work. And if your situation is a mix, say CDCP for the essentials and out-of-pocket for something cosmetic, we'll show you exactly what falls where. The goal is simple: clear numbers, no guessing, and care that supports your long-term oral and whole-body health.

What it generally doesn't cover

Like most dental plans, the CDCP doesn't cover every type of treatment. It generally focuses on care that's considered medically necessary rather than cosmetic or optional services.

  • Teeth whitening and other purely cosmetic work.
  • Adult braces, Invisalign, or other orthodontic treatments provided mainly for cosmetic reasons.
  • Anything past the set limits, like extra cleanings in a single year.
  • Services that needed approval ahead of time but weren't approved first.
