Dental emergencies we treat

If something doesn't feel right, it's worth giving us a call. These are some of the most common dental emergencies we see, and we'll do our best to see you promptly and provide the care you need:

Severe or worsening toothache+

Whether it's a sharp pain when you bite down or a constant throbbing ache that's keeping you awake, significant tooth pain often means something inside the tooth or around it needs prompt attention. Our first priority is helping relieve your discomfort, identifying the cause, and explaining your treatment options so you can make an informed decision about your care.

Broken, cracked or chipped tooth+

A broken, cracked, or chipped tooth can be painful, leave sharp edges, expose sensitive inner layers, or become worse if left untreated. We'll examine the tooth, help make you comfortable, and recommend the best way to protect and restore your smile.

Knocked-out tooth+

A knocked-out permanent tooth is a true dental emergency. Call us immediately. Hold the tooth by the chewing surface (the crown), not the root. If it's dirty, gently rinse it for a few seconds with milk or clean running water—don't scrub or dry it. If possible, gently place it back into the socket. If not, keep it moist in milk or saliva while you come to our office. If the tooth can be replanted quickly—ideally within about 60 minutes—the chances of saving it are much higher.

Lost or loose filling or crown+

A lost filling or loose crown can leave your tooth sensitive and vulnerable. Even if it isn't painful, it's a good idea to have it checked as soon as possible. The sooner it's repaired, the easier it often is to protect the remaining tooth and help avoid more extensive treatment.

Abscess, swelling or signs of infection+

Swelling in the gums, face, or jaw can be a sign of a dental infection. Don't ignore it, especially if the swelling is increasing or you're having trouble swallowing or breathing. Contact us as soon as possible so we can assess the problem and begin the appropriate treatment.

Sports injuries and dental trauma+

Whether it's a chipped tooth, a tooth that's been pushed out of position, or an injury to the lips or gums, prompt treatment can make a big difference. We'll assess the injury, help relieve any discomfort, and recommend the best treatment to protect your smile.

What to do right now

These simple first-aid tips can help protect your tooth and keep you comfortable until you can get to our office. Call us first, then:

Toothache

Rinse gently with warm salt water. If food may be trapped between your teeth, floss carefully to remove it. If there's swelling, apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek. Avoid placing aspirin directly on the gum.

Broken or chipped tooth

Save any pieces and rinse your mouth with warm water. If there's bleeding, apply gentle pressure with clean gauze or a clean cloth. Use a cold compress to reduce swelling, and avoid chewing on that side until we see you.

Knocked-out tooth

Hold it by the chewing surface (the crown), not the root. If it's dirty, gently rinse it for a few seconds with milk or clean running water — don't scrub or dry it. If you can, place it back in the socket; if not, keep it moist in milk or saliva and call us immediately — time matters.

Lost filling or crown

Keep the crown if you have it. Avoid chewing on that side and keep the area clean. Call us so we can repair, re-cement, or replace it if needed before the tooth is damaged further.

Abscess or swelling

Swelling or signs of infection should never be ignored. Rinse gently with warm salt water to help keep the area clean, and call us as soon as possible so we can assess the problem and begin the appropriate treatment.

Sports injury

Rinse your mouth gently with warm water, apply gentle pressure with clean gauze to control any bleeding, and apply a cold compress. Save any tooth fragments and call us. For facial trauma or a head injury, seek medical care first.

Emergency dentist questions

How fast can I be seen for a dental emergency?+

We keep emergency appointments available whenever possible so we can see patients as soon as we can. If you're in pain or have a dental injury, call us directly at (604) 541-9790 rather than filling out an online form. We'll do our best to see you as quickly as possible, offer guidance over the phone if needed, and help you get the care you need.

What counts as a dental emergency?+

If you're in pain, something doesn't feel right, or you're worried about your teeth or gums, it's worth giving us a call. Common dental emergencies include severe or worsening toothaches, swelling of the face or gums, a cracked or broken tooth, a knocked-out permanent tooth, or a filling or crown that has come loose or fallen out. If you're unsure whether your problem is an emergency, call us. We're happy to help you decide what to do next.

How much does emergency dental care cost?+

The cost depends on the cause of the problem and the treatment you need, which we can only determine after an examination. We welcome all insurances and provide direct billing whenever possible. We also participate in the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP). Our fees follow the British Columbia Fee Guide, and we'll always explain your treatment options and provide a written estimate before any treatment begins, so you know exactly what to expect.

Do you see patients after hours?+

Our office is open Monday to Thursday 9:00 am–5:00 pm, Friday by appointment, and one Saturday each month. We do our best to accommodate dental emergencies during office hours with same-day appointments whenever possible. If you have a serious medical emergency outside our office hours — such as uncontrolled bleeding, severe swelling that's making it difficult to breathe or swallow, or significant facial trauma — go to your nearest hospital emergency department or call 911. If you've knocked out a permanent tooth, contact us as soon as possible for advice and treatment when we're available.

Do you take walk-ins and the CDCP for emergencies?+

Yes. We welcome patients covered by the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP), provincial dental programs, private insurance, and those without insurance. If you're having a dental emergency, we recommend calling us before you come whenever possible. This allows our team to prepare for your arrival, offer advice if needed, and do our best to minimize your wait.

Are you welcoming new patients for emergencies?+

Yes. You do not need to be an existing patient or live in South Surrey or White Rock to see us for a dental emergency. If you're in pain or have experienced a dental injury, our priority is to assess the problem, help relieve your discomfort, and provide the care you need. We'll explain your treatment options clearly and do our best to make your visit as comfortable as possible.
